Left 4 Dead fans are die-hard. Few gaming franchises have as dedicated a fan base as this Valve title has developed with just two titles in the series. Not being one to be left without adding to the fanaticism of the franchise, this heads-up display was designed for the gun-loving zombie-hunters who cannot get enough of the game. With Rainmeter, a desktop conversion program, there is a way to have the game at the ready for fans while at work or simply taking a break from the team-based shooter.

Features:

Rainmeter has been around for some time, and is a favorite with gamers, and those interested in customizing their PCs more to their own personal tastes with a little something extra. What Rainmeter does is add widgets and clickable icons to dress a desktop. Each of these widgets and icons are customizable, from look to shape and size, giving the user almost complete control over how their desktop should look with any theme they choose. Supported by an ever-growing online community, there are hundreds upon hundreds of skins and packages designed to suit a variety of tastes. These often come with detailed instructions on how to set up and customize the desktop to the user's liking.

Though it may sound like an involved process, it is fairly forgiving to even the most computer illiterate.

The experience of the game is alive with this customized desktop. Health bars from Left 4 Dead act as buttons to access different disk drives, systems information, and memory usage. Wide clock widgets and calendars are also present, strategically placed to catch the user's attention better than the small line at the far right of the taskbar.

While it is possible to add in more widgets and icons than those present in the original package, they will have to be sought out separately and applied by the user. This, however, requires a little knowledge of Rainmeter as it is not packaged together like the original Left 4 Dead HUD package.

All of these options are customizable and can be removed if they ever become a burden to the user. In some cases, most fans may want to remove the extra widgets for a feel closer to the actual Left 4 Dead experience.

Looking at it for long enough time, users may forget their looking at a still desktop and not the game in full motion.

Quality:

The Left 4 Dead HUD has ten high-res wallpapers that feature scenes familiar to fans of the games. These images all are 1680x1050, making them best experienced on a wide screen monitor rather than a laptop. Still, it makes for a great viewing experience for smaller screens. The determinate factor on smaller screens will be the quality of the actual screen, not this particular Rainmeter package.

Pros

Visually immersive Left 4 Dead images

In-game meters as clickable icons

Easy to apply in its original package.

Cons

Applying new icons and widgets may require experimentation or help from a more experienced Rainmeter user
